We always look back to our younger years with fond memories and by association, Bukit Timah will always hold a special place in my heart. The old school Coronation Plaza was one of our hangouts after school (No points for getting my school right). Back then there weren't that many options for us. It was Ke3 Ai4 Ji1 for the chicken cutlet rice, cosy corner for Japanese food or Prince for the $6 Western food set with free flow drinks. I remember mugging for our O level Chinese paper at Venezia at 6th Avenue. There's that ice cream prata place that closed down too. Serene Centre used to have a 2 storey MacDonalds which has since been downsized. Just like how memories fade and we create new ones, new food establishments have taken over/sprung up in the area and i've come to count on some of them as my comfort food source.

The latest addition to the Greenwood eateries is Baker & Cook, an artisan bakery and food store opened by Global Baker Dean Brettschneider. The month old bakery produces its own brand range of jams, cookies, cakes, homemade granola and more. Just the selection of breads alone will leave you stupefied. It took me a long while to finally decide on what i want.

The set up kinda reminds me of Simply Bread which is located at Guthrie House at 6th Ave but B&C has more of a pastry and dessert selection. The 20-odd seater fills up pretty quickly and space in the air conditioned section is hard to come by. Expect to jostle for attention if you want to satisfy your hungry tummy! To make things easier, check out their menu on their website and place your order immediately upon arrival. :)

I had a blind taste test of their bagel prior to coming to the bakery and it is the best i've tasted in Singapore. It is chewy without being overly tough on the jaw and i love how there is this tinge of saltiness to the dough. Very New-Yorkish. The blueberry bagel ($2.35ea) is a dessert in itself. The berries would simply burst when you sink your teeth into the bagel and act as a fresh jam to sweeten each bite.

Sandwiches are available at $8.50 and what's available is dependent on the Chef's mood. There were only 2 options and that makes life a lot easier for indecisive eaters. Ham And Cheese Turkish Pide Sandwich ($8.50) was my choice for my Tinner (Tea+Dinner). The bread is tough on the outside, the toasted part is almost like a pizza crust and it crackles with each bite. However, it's pillowy soft on the inside. Love the black sesame seeds on top. They added on a smoky dimension that is oh-so-fragrant. Eat it fast though. It really gets the jaw going when it's colder.
Z was raving about the quiche even before we got to the bakery. For $7.95, you get a slice of the pie with a salad of your choice. I'm not a big fan of vegetables but this is very fresh. The burst of colors of the fresh greens and reds really helped whet our appetites. The eggy centre was extremely moist and creamy. I've hit the Quiche jackpot! The pastry is not very crispy because it has absorbed all the essence of the fillings.
Before leaving, i simply had to express my disappointment at missing out on the meat quiche (Only the Veg was available). A Quiche Lorraine would be oh-so-perfect. The Chef immediately went to check if there's another pie for the next day and WALA! Wish granted! It always helps to look extremely sad and pouty. Heh. :P (Great idea for a T-shirt design). Anyway, it was equally moist, so it's not purely the contribution of the vegetables.

The wide array of colorful desserts were hard to resist. We started off with the lemon tart. I like the crumbly and buttery texture of the crust. The curd is a little more fluid and sticky and also leaning towards the sweet side. I would prefer it to be a tad more sour (it's a lemon tart afterall!). In the end i emptied the golden cup of its content and focused on the tart while Z happily ate the curd.

Had the mochaccino and it was a liquid chocolate-expresso fantasy. For $5.50, a huge mug of fragrant chocolatey dream is served. The texture is smooth and the foam was really thick and it held up the sugar for a really long time (i'm gonna start timing next time). Anyway, it's almost like drinking hot chocolate but the sneaky caffeine gave me an energizer-bunny buzz for the rest of the night. This is like downing cocktails without realizing how strong the drinks are and then getting pretty drunk. Caffeine is my alcohol.
The cakes look very yummy, especially the cheesecakes. They look especially moist and dense. Whole cakes go for about $23-25.
Z doesn't like cheesecake so we settled for the chocolate cake which was quite a disappointment. There is no denying that the texture was quite perfect- dense and thick. However, it seems to lack in the chocolate department, it just wasn't rich enough. On the whole, it was pretty dry.
Packed the shortbread home. Every mouthful was a cranberry explosion. Z thought it was too much as it's hard to enjoy the true taste of the shortbread. I thought the shortbread was a little bland and the taste fell flat. Thankfully the cranberries revived it a little.

So yay! More brunch options in the Bukit Timah area. Don't say i never share! Now off to yoga!

Dean & Deluca needs no introduction. Since its humble beginnings in SoHo (1977), it has expanded and established itself as the upscale grocery store chain in NYC. I was pretty stoked when it announced that it was coming to our sunny shores. Finally an alternative to Jones (which is terribly overpriced).

Well, D&D opened its doors in June. So why did it take me 2 months to write my review? Well.. all that hype kinda deterred me from visiting. I heard horror stories about long waits and screw ups with the order system and all. It's really not how i want to kick start my weekend brunch. So i waited for a bit. Gave them time to sort things out, get settled down.
Well i must say the smart me made a wise choice. I slowly eased into the D&D dinestyle. I tested the waters with their iced mocha and left the place swooning and buzzing with the caffeine packed chocolate espresso drink. Absolutely thick and delicious melted chocolate that arrests my heart. It's really quite the perk me up. If you love your chocolates, try the Marble latte which is a mix of White and Dark Chocolate.

Each time i only had space for their pastries and cakes from my favorites Baker & Cook, Bread Project and Maison Keyser. Twitter and Instagram followers of mine would know that D&D is my current pre-yoga hangout. I've had the outsourced Salmon and spinach quiche and tarts. The small bites are perfect for all the downward dog and chaturanga. The in house bakers are still in the process of expanding their repertoire of bakes. My first taste of their Chocolate Pain was unspectacular though. Would love for it to be more airy and layered inside for it was just a little flat.
I only recently plunged into the deep end with their All Day Breakfast offerings 1 lazy weekend afternoon. I love how quiet and peaceful the place is. Absolutely no competition with all the people armed with their DSLRs trying to get shots of their food (guilty as charged).

The Sautéed Brioche French Toast (S$22) was intimidating when served. 2 one-inch thick slices of French Toasted Brioche, nicely coated with the Salted Caramel and a little charred on the exterior. This is topped with the Bananas, Fresh Berries and Vanilla Ice Cream. It looks like a diabetic's nightmare. But fret not. The caramel is more smoky than cloyingly sweet and that went well with the crispy and pillowy butter brioche. I LOVE the brioche. The ice cream lends a touch of creaminess to gel the various flavors and textures together. Perfecto.
I love Eggs Ben and i love my Jamón Ibérico so obviously i order the Eggs Iberico (S$25), a twist on the popular Eggs Benny. 2 Poached Eggs with Sautéed Mushrooms, Jamón Ibérico and Hollandaise Sauce on Sundried Tomato Bread. Sounds perfect yea?

Well.. sadly, it wasn't. This dish was unsatisfying on many levels. The texture of the bread did not complement the eggs. It crumbled like a spoilt wet sponge after soaking the essence of the egg yolk. I also couldn't taste the sundried tomato at all. It seemed very much like a sad brown toast. The hollandaise sauce was too bland and diluted for my liking. My first set came with overdone poached eggs but the problem was quickly rectified when i sent them back. Overall, it was like eating different ingredients separately.

There are quite a lot of other dishes available from salads to burgers to sandwiches and more All Day Brekkie options like waffles and bagels. I will slowly get down to tasting them since it's so convenient for me. As for you my dear readers, either be an early bird or simply have breakfast for dinner. That's probably the best way to beat that weekend queue.

I love sweets and I go by the motto "Life is uncertain. Eat dessert first." I'm a rule breaker when it comes to the sequence of my dining courses and desserts sometimes (actually most of the time) come before any other dish. Why should we stick to the standard and the norm? That's plain boring. Smoulder is a rebel just like me. These softcore bakers have taken a restaurant dessert favorite, chocolate lava cake, and transformed it into a bite size snack to be enjoyed on the go.
I would say they are absolutely guilt free but who am i kidding? Though i must say that the smallness in size definitely helps with easing that nagging voice in my head. Maybe just 1.. or 2? :)
Smoulder uses the under baking method instead of the ganache one. This ensures the consistency in the batter and molten center. Of course, the technique and temperature has to be monitored very carefully and i would say that Smoulder has perfected them both. The crust was a little crispy and it readily gave way to the warm gooey heart within.
The soft-core cakes are baked fresh daily and are handmade with only premium ingredients and zero preservatives. Barry Callebaut Belgian chocolate is used instead of Valrhona to give it the sweeter taste.

There are currently nine flavours available: Dark Chocolate (50% cacao content), Intense Dark Chocolate (70% cacao content), Dark Chocolate Black Forest (with alcohol), Milk Chocolate Mocha, Milk Chocolate Rum and Raisin, White Chocolate Matcha, White Chocolate Raspberry, White Chocolate Pistachio, and White Chocolate Lemon.

I love their dark and milk chocolate base cakes but i was thoroughly impressed with the white chocolate flavored ones. The flavors are so intense that i forgotten that they were chocolate lava batter. I would say that the Lemon is comparable to Baker & Cook's lemon tart filling, with a creamier texture due to the chocolate and a little more tang. Pistachio and Matcha were equally intense in flavors because these folks are really generous with the ingredients.
At S$3.90 a pop, i would consider it to be a little pricey but they are oh so delicious. It sure does help that they're cheaper when you buy in bulk. Spread the love i say!

There is a new flavor in the house, Milk Chocolate Hazelnut! If you like Ferrero i think you'll dig this. :)

Price: S$3.90 each, S$10.90 for 3, S$29.90 for 9.

Thanks to the Smoulder folks for the invite! :) I would have featured them even if they didn't.
